New Members

There are several new members coming on to the committee for this meeting. In addition to Ehab Mustafa, who joined us at the last meeting, we also welcomed Paige Sorge, assistant volleyball coach and Adrian Touchstone, a student in the chemical abuse counseling program and a student ambassador. Marcus King, the assistant basketball coach, has agreed to serve on the committee but was unable to make this meeting. Hunter will be graduating in May. The committee recognized her contribution to the committee for the past year. We will look for one more student to add—one with ties to student government.

Town Hall Meeting / Synthetic Drugs (report)

Detective Crowell reported that the Town Hall Meeting of February 18th was a great success. Responses from an evaluation from the speakers and vendors were all very positive. From this, there have been requests for similar meetings with different drugs. A coalition with stakeholders in Baytown is being considered with a pro-active approach for education in the community. The Baytown PD, hospitals, and emergency responders are starting to collect statistics on what drugs are prevalent in the community through arrests, overdoses, and ER visits.

We briefly talked about a survey for Lee College faculty, staff, and students on what they see as issues and how it’s effecting the community. More clarification is needed on the type of survey and if it’s the CORE survey how it would be funded.

The Last High Documentary

Det. Crowell shared the progress made on the making of the documentary, The Last High, which focuses on the use and misuse of synthetic cannabinoids. The City of Baytown is underwriting the project with the contract being signed in August at the City Council meeting. The film should be complete in the fall. The committee watched s short trailer, which was also shared at the Town Hall Meeting.

Discussion of Athletics / Drug Policy

Rosemary and Howard are working with the athletic director in updating the policy used with the basketball and volleyball teams. It was suggested that the screening of synthetics be included in the regular drug screening of the athletes. There was discussion on how the policy needs to give support to our students, not just punishment.

Biennial Report

Rosemary reported that we need to start working on the Drug Free Campus Biennial Report that will be due this summer. A subcommittee of Amanda (HR), JR (security) and others will be created to work on this mandatory report to the Department of Education. Within the report, we need to show effectiveness of our AOD program and should always be including statistics or ways of measuring the effectiveness of what we are doing. If any others are interested in working with this subcommittee, contact Rosemary.

Summer Bash – Alcohol Drug Awareness Event

For this summer, we will be planning the Summer Bash, an awareness event. It will be similar to what we did in the fall. Several dates were discussed and if we should keep it in the summer I session (more students) or have it as an event for the first day of summer II. The two dates discussed were June 20th and July 11th. Zane reported that we would have support from student activities for free giveaways and events. Paige stated that the volleyball campus will bring in HS students on the 20th and may give those students an opportunity to participate. We will work with Student Activities and our schedules to pinpoint the day by the next meeting.

Other Announcements/Activities

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters will host a workshop in Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault on Thursday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m. in Edythe Old Studio.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting is scheduled for April 27th at 2 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
