Review of Minutes from November 11

Approved as written.

Smoke-Free Campus Discussion

At our last meeting, we learned that the campus is adding areas on the outskirts of campus for designated smoking areas. There was a discussion of creating a survey to gage the campus climate on having a smoke-free campus. For this meeting, we learned that a survey was done in May 2014. This information was presented to the campus

  • Via email, Hunter shared information after attending an extended cabinet meeting in which there was a discussion of moving the campus to becoming smoke-free. She also learned of the survey done previously. She stated that they expressed the desire to go to a smoke-free campus.
  • Rosemary was able to get the results of the survey which was offered to staff and students. There were 792 total votes with 504 (64%) voting in favor of a smoke free campus and 288 (36%) voting against having a smoke-free campus.
  • There will be three areas designated as smoking areas. We know that one will be near McNulty Haddock building, one near the Republic Whiting Building, and we are unsure of the third location.
  • The committee is asking for clarification including these questions:
    • Does the administration have a timeline for becoming a smoke free campus? o What is their definition of “smoke-free?” Are they including electronic cigarettes with this policy?
    • What are the penalties for violating the smoking policy and how will these be enforced?
  • We also need to look at our updated AOD statement to see if there needs to be any amendments to the statement based on the new smoking areas.

Policy Notification Postcard

At our last meeting, it was suggested that we update the policy notification postcard to create a handout to give to staff and students. We would keep the “policy notification” information on one side with small corrections noted. On the other side, the committee suggested we add some social norming type information in a “did you know …” type of format. Suggestions included information the relationship of drug/alcohol use and sexual assault, employment and drug use, and the results of the smoke-free campus survey. Rosemary asked members to send in ideas or suggestions to her.

Future Town Hall Meeting

Detective Crowell reported on an increase in deaths and overdoses from synthetic drugs in the Baytown area since November of this year. In response to this, the Baytown Police Department would like to partner with Lee College and others to present a Town Hall type meeting. This would be an educational type format with a panel discussion and vendors that provide services and resources for the community. Rosemary will work with the president’s office to check on the availability of the Rundell Hall Conference Room. A suggested date was early February.

Other Announcements/Activities

  • Rosemary reported that the website has been updated to include information on this committee and links to the presentations from the October 7th event. This can be found at
  • One of the topics for the college’s professional development day activities will be on Campus SaVE. This will be information provided to all faculty and staff on the morning of January 12.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 14 at 1:30 p.m. with the location to be announced. At this meeting, we will work on the planning of the Town Hall meeting and discuss a time for spring meetings considering a new schedule of classes.

Respectfully Submitted,
Dr. Rosemary Coffman, Associate Dean of Student Affairs
